Athlete of the Term Award- Nominees and Winners

Each term our coaches will be nominating their 'Athlete of the term'. The winners will be chosen by local sporting legends.

We base our nominations not only on their sporting ability and commitment, but their determination, perseverance and sportsmanship.

Spring 1 Athletes

Paige and Caleb- Dean Primary School 


Both these children have achieved the athlete of the half term. Not only in their weekly PE lessons but in their classroom activities and lessons every day with their teacher. They have been working very hard on leadership, communication and tactics. We have been blown away by they're efforts. Not only on one occasion but throughout the whole of the half term. Caleb has really improved with his communication skills and he has been working very hard to play fair and that his team plays fair aswell. He has shown great compassion and listening skills for the younger children in his class. Paige has really shone throughout. She’s taking on leadership roles, supporting others and encouraging in a very positive manner. She has also created great twists to some of the games we have played while she has been thinking about the tactics and how to use the strengths of her teammates. Well done Caleb and Paige from Dean Primary School. You have been great role models for your school.

Leo- Maryport Primary 


Leo has excelled throughout this half term and has been able to showcase his speed, coordination and agility in our P.E tag rugby lessons to a very high standard.


Leo also has fantastic knowledge of the sport and this is shown in his tactics and decision making when attacking and defending. I’ve also been impressed with how he’s shared those ideas with his team mates, a constant voice to make sure they are following team plans and always being positive and supporting his team mates- brilliant leadership traits. Well done and well deserved Leo! 


Thomas- St Cuthbert's Primary School


Well done to Thomas who’s my athlete of the this term. Thomas has showed great leadership skills throughout every lesson whether that’s taking charge of a team, listening to others on his team or organising his team tactics. Thomas has also showed great communication skills not just listening to me but also to his fellow classmates. He also uses their feedback to help

improve his game! Well done Thomas and keep up the good work.

Gracie- Victoria Infants 


Well done Gracie you have been amazing this half term as always. During the games and challenges you always show a great understanding of tactics and make plans to help you and and your team win. Your attitude towards PE is perfect you are always one of the first to help others showing good leadership and communication skills.

Connor - Victoria Junior School


Connor has worked hard all half term on our block of Outdoor Adventurous Activities and stood out as future leader.


He is alway supportive and encouraging of his teammates, helping them to correct their techniques and offering help when things don’t quite go to plan. 


Connor is able to correctly understand and use terminology related to problem solving, team work, leadership and map reading.


He is always happy to lend a hand and help with equipment and tidying up!

Winter 1 Athletes

Hope- St Cuthberts School 


Well done to Hope for being my athlete of the half term for Spring 1. Hope has shown great sportsmanship and honesty throughout the half term. She has taken on different roles in lessons and excelled- from refereeing  in basketball matches to competing in dodgeball games. Hope has shown great honesty and fair play throughout. She always sticks to the rules of games and is a great role model for the rest of the class follow. She has a great attitude and a real willingness to learn and play fair. Well done Hope. 

Joe- Maryport Primary 


This half term we have worked on our ball skills, putting them into football games & challenges. 


Joe is a passionate footballer but throughout each and every lesson, he has always played fair and honest which were our aims for this half term.


In our warm up games, Joe listened carefully to the rules, gave 100% effort and always played fairly. 


He has encouraged and supported children in the class who were more nervous when controlling the ball. In competitions, not only was he playing fair but made sure his team mates were being honest and adhering to the rules. 


It has been an absolute pleasure to work with Joe and see him develop his skills and be such a happy, fair and honest superstar.

Harrison- Distington Community School 


Well done Harrison you are my athlete of the half term for outstanding honesty and fair play. Harrison’s perfect behavior sets a great example for his peers each week. He always celebrates victory’s in the right way, demonstrating great sportsmanship and helps his friends when he can. Harrison has also shown amazing sporting ability for his age and his enthusiasm is great to see in P.E. 

Ellie- Seaton Junior School


Well done to Ellie at Seaton Junior School, Year 6.  Ellie displays fair play, honesty and respect in all of our lessons and after school clubs she attends.  


Ellie will always clarify rules, make sure she and her team mates adhere to them, although hugely competitive she has a great approach to winning and losing and makes sure honesty is always at the forefront.

Noah- Maryport Primary 


Congratulations to Noah at Maryport Primary School.


Noah has a fantastic attitude in P.E lessons. He demonstrates super skill during activities, puts 100% effort into everything he does and shows a real willingness to learn and improve.



This half term Noah has been super competitive, and tries his best to win all the competitions/ challenges in our P.E lessons. But what is great is he always competes fairly. He’s shown great honesty and only wins points once he has completed a challenge correctly. He’s been fair and makes sure that his team mates or partners take their turns so each person has equal chance land opportunity. 



And he shows super listening skills- making sure that he understands the competition rules during the demonstrations so that he can stick to the rules during the activities. Keep up the fantastic work Noah. Well done 👏?

Autumn 2 Athletes


Lilly- Bridekirk Dovenby Primary School


Well done Lilly! You have been amazing this half term- helping your friends in our PE sessions. Lilly always tries her best to help anyone who needs it and show others how to do certain activities if they are struggling. She makes sure everybody has the same opportunities and is fair when taking turns in lessons. She’s also always polite and a pleasure to teach.

Jaden- Flimby 


Jaden has been an outstanding example of fairness and kindness.

He understands the rules of the games and always plays fair. He also goes out of his way to encourage and support his teammates in his class.


An example of this- In one lesson, two children were getting upset as their team had not won a certain challenge. Jayden decided to join their team and help them think of a tactic and practiced with the two children to help build their confidence. Well done Jaden for being a fantastic teammate. 

Maddox - Victoria Juniors 


As always Maddox has been a pleasure to coach during our block of hockey.


Although a talented sportsmen, it’s his social skills that are always at the fore.  Listens wells to all, supports his team mates and always first to say well done to the opposing team.


A great team mate, keep up the good work Maddox.

Maggie- Flimby Primary


Well done to Maggie at Flimby Primary School who has been absolutely brilliant this half term. Her respect for others, sportsmanship and enthusiasm has been second to none. Approaching every lesson with a willingness to learn and help others has been brilliant to see. I’ve been really impressed with Maggies attitude. She’s been very respectful to me and to her class mates. 

Jacob- Maryport Juniors 


Jacob is a very talented athlete who puts 100% effort into his P.E and that shows in his performances in lessons.



This year I’ve seen a massive improvement in Jacob’s teamwork & leadership skills. At the start of the year if his team were getting beat in competitions or making mistakes, Jacob could show his frustration and react to his team mates in a negative way. After speaking to him about his reactions, we’ve seen a massive improvement and he is now helping his teammates. He’s showing fantastic


patience and is positive in his reinforcement to them. He’s one of the first to offer solutions to problems when coming up with team tactics. He’s also offering advice to team mates and letting them know what he would do in order to help them improve. He is turning into a fantastic leader. Well done Jacob for working hard on this area.

Autumn 1 Athletes

Isla and Ruby- Seaton Juniors


After the success of the Lionesses it’s great to hear the news that two Year 6 girls from Seaton Juniors are on their way in the football pathway.


Isla Jackson  who plays for Celtic Boys, Allerdale Girls and Workington Reds in the Community and Ruby Johnston who plays for Whitehaven Amateur  and Workington Reds in the Community have been selected for Carlisle United Girls U12.


Both are tremendous PE students and we hope you enjoy your once a week sessions and upcoming games. Well done. 


Emily- Wiggonby 


This half term Emily has returned to her gymnastics club for the first time since covid. In the few weeks that she’s been back, Emily has progressed which has resulted in her being moved up to the advanced class for children in years 6-9. To be in the class children must be able to complete backwards walkovers, splits & backhand spring to a high standard. 


Emily also goes to Carlisle Dance Academy once a week as well as ballet, cheer, tap and Acro- where she is also in the highest level for that too!


Emily is a highly motivated pupil that always gives 100% effort in every P.E lesson so it’s no so surprise to hear about her achievements outside of school. Keep up the fantastic work Emily. 

Freya- Maryport 


This half term we have been really been working hard on our friendship, and being kind and respectful to each other as we settle back into our PE lessons.

Freya has been so consistent week on week, always being ready and listening. Encouraging others in her class to do the same. Freya has tried to do her best every lesson and always play fair, even when others in her team have not, she has rose above to help them and explain and demonstrated correctly how the game should be played.

One week, a little boy was very upset as his team didn't win, Freya went and spoke to him and encouraged him to join back in the next game which he did.

When a little girl fell, Freya checked she was ok.

Freya has shown excellent behaviour and been an outstanding friend and team player to get class. Well done and keep up the good work.

Evan- Victoria Infants


Evan is my athlete of the half term for his excellent rugby skills he has played in a rugby tournament and even won player of the tournament. He also works really hard during pe and comes to both sports after school clubs during the week. Well done Evan for being so active. Keep it up!

Alania- St Cuthberts 


Over the course of the past few weeks I have been delivering coaching sessions across a variety of schools. In this time I have seen a lot of great athletes and ability. Someone that has stood out from the rest is Alaina of years 3/4 at st cuthberts Wigton. Alaina has shown a great attitude and skill across every session. Outside of school Alaina has recently joined a rugby club within Wigton where her skills outside of school are showing inside of Pe lessons. Always ready, Always giving 100% and always wanting improve and get better which is great to see for any coach. Well done Alaina, keep up the good worke image for decorative purposes.

Summer 1 Athletes


Leilan-  Maryport Juniors 


We have been working through our Athletics with the 5 Steps, 5 Star programme.


He was My top scoring sprinter, hurdles and his long jump was tremendous.


Leilan week on week has been consistent with putting 💯 effort in with each challenge.


It was remarkable to see how in each training he would keep pushing to be better, and taking on board every coaching tip and putting it in action. 


He was always so polite and helpful with his cheeky smile.

Annabelle 


Well done Annabelle this half term you have been amazing. Annabelle is always listening, excited to learn and the first to answer questions showing great knowledge for her age. She has also surprised me with her ability in all aspects during the multi skill sessions including her teamwork and communication skills as well as her physical skills across all sports.


Jack- Year 3 from Seaton Juniors


 Jack has come to every 5 star 5 steps lessons with a determination to succeed, even with an injured wrist. The programme scores are based on Year 5/6 so for Jack to reach 5 stars in the sprint, hurdles and high jump is fantastic. Well done Jack

Luke and Jonty- Wiggonby Primary School 


This half term both Luke & Jonty have worked hard to develop their athletic ability to achieve their very best in the 5 Star 5 Steps events.



Their determination and efforts have been rewarded with both getting 5 Stars in the sprint, hurdles, high jump and ball push events. They both finished with a very impressive final score of 30/ 35 points with Jonty breaking the record for the year 5 ball push score & Luke breaking the record for the year 6 sprint.



Well done for your fantastic achievements this half term boys.

Spring 2 Athletes

Harvey- Wiggonby Primary School 


Harvey has had a fantastic half term, always giving 100% effort and eager to listen &  learn to improve his overall speed. He’s worked hard throughout the half term on his sprinting technique- really focusing on the teaching points to help him develop his overall speed, reaction time, agility & power. He’s also one of the first in the class to share ideas when it comes answering questions & suggesting tactics to games- showing super knowledge & awareness. Well done Harvey. Well deserved 👏?

George- Bassenthwaite School 


My athlete of this half term has to go to George.


He has been such a role model in not only his own year group, but with 3 other year groups he has been working with this half term.

He had been so encouraging, motivating, extremely helpful and the best cheerleader for his team. He has supported younger members when needed without being promted once. Helped them with the understanding of the game always with the most enthusiasm you could ask for. 

He has worked so hard in each PE lesson with his speed tests and had some fantastic ideas to implement these skills into the games. Expressing fantastic cognitive behaviour throughout.

Thomas and Matthew- Fairfield Primary School 


This half term I have really enjoyed working with the Year 5/6 pupil’s at Fairfield Primary After School Athletics club. My award this half term is a joint award to brothers Thomas and Matthew.  They are both hard working, intelligent and coachable children who not only excel at speed but also have high levels of stamina.  This half term both represented Cumbria Schools at the national schools cross country event held at Loughborough. Thomas got off to a great start, leading the u11 boys to eventually finish 68th.  Matthew showed fantastic perseverance after a fall to battle to 22nd place in the u10s.  Keep up the good work lads, fantastic achievements. 

Freddie- All Saints


Freddie has worked hard all half term on his rugby skills working hard on his passing, catching and movement into spaces during games. 


He is alway supportive and encouraging of his teammates, helping them to correct their techniques and offering comfort when things don’t quite go to plan. 


Freddie is able to correctly understand and use terminology related to rugby such as “scoring a try, pass and move, quick hands, pass to space”. He is always happy to lend a hand and help with equipment and tidying up!

Jayden- Victoria Infants 


Well done Jayden you have been great this half term showing some amazing speed during our PE lessons. You have also shown really good cognitive skills when thinking of tactics during different challenges and games. You always try your best and are fully focused every week. Well deserved!

Spring 1 Athletes

Milo- Maryport Primary School


Milo has had a fantastic half term, always full of energy, enthusiasm & ready to give 100% effort each lesson. He’s been fully engaged with all activities and really eager to learn & improve his skills in any way possible. Milo has shown brilliant coordination and has been able to transfer that ability across a range of different activities that we’ve covered this half term including dribbling with hands & feet, passing with feet, throwing & catching. This has them allowed him to excel in the different sports competitions he’s participated in P.E this half term. Well done Milo!

Billy- Victoria Infants


My athlete for this half term is Billy. He has been amazing during our skills over the past few weeks. He has shown a variety of impressive skills from his football dribbling, excellent throwing and catching and also great athleticism during our jumping and skipping sessions. He is always determined to do his best and try to help his team win every challenge and match. He also got an amazing score for our basketball bounce challenge beating the existing record! 

Jessica 


Jessica has been working consistently each week with every challenge. We have been focusing on our “skills” alongside the Healthy Ways programme.


She has been working really hard and even practising at home 😊👏 🏀 


It has been lovely to see Jessica so involved and conscientious and growing in her confidence too.

When I awarded Jessica her certificate, all her class gave her a big round of applause as they had noticed the work she had put in, but also she has been a kind friend and helped them. 


Kuba- Ewanrigg junior school- Year 3 


Kuba has shown lots of determination to develop his PE skills this half term. He has shown a positive and mature attitude each week and hasn’t shied away from a challenge. 


Kuba has been able to focus on the task at hand, develop his passing, catching, throwing, speed and agility skills. He has also demonstrated great teamwork, always showing his peers respect and kindness.

Archie - Victoria Junior School - Year 5 


Archie is a very focused and committed to PE & Sport.  He has performed our block of skills lessons superbly well this half term, scoring highly in all our challenges and transferring them well to games. 


Ar present he is excelling outside of school in football but we hope he also try’s different sports as the opportunities arise, I am sure lots of success lie ahead. Well done Archie.

Autumn 2 Athletes

Rueban- St Bridget's 



Rueban has shown excellent athletic ability across a wide range of multi-skill activities this half term. His speed, skill, and stamina have been excellent allowing him to excel within invasion based games. He has also proven his athletic ability by being his schools strength and suppleness champion during our Allerdale school challenges, completeing 43 jumping squats in 1 minute and scoring 22cm on his sit and reach flexibility test.  


Rueban has demonstrated a strong knowledge of sport by linking activities to sporting scenarios and has been able to reflect well on what he has learnt by drawing pictures of the games we have played. 


Rueban always has a smile on his face, he gives his all to each and every activity and is always willing to help others during sessions.

Well done Rueban! 

Amber


Well done Amber! You have worked really hard this half term on all of our strength lessons. You have shown great determination and a great attitude when playing games setting a good example to the rest of the class. You have shown amazing ability when performing our different strength challenges with perfect technique. 

Zayn- Seaton Juniors 


This half term, whilst working on strength, I have been looking at children’s personal development. Concentrating on self-motivation, trying ones best at every activity and never giving up, even when it gets tough! One pupil has stood out in particular, Zayn, Year 5 at Seaton Junior School, he has shown huge personal development despite suffering from Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenital. He gives 100% often adapting movements to enable personal success. At no time does Zayn get down, he attacks every activity with a smile and a determination I admire.  In addition, he has a mature attitude, Zayn is always the first to offer help at the end of the lesson. Great work Zayn, keep it up. 

Maggie- Flimby 


This young lady has worked amazing on her strength challenges this half term. 

We have had a football theme for our lessons at Flimby and being working on our skill and strength to help us in the game.

She has made great progression week on week and been such a great team member. Not only improving for herself but going above and beyond to also help others in her class who have been less confident in the sport.

Jo- Wiggonby Primary School 


This half term Jo has made fantastic progress with his strength in our P.E lessons. Jo was initially hesitant to take part in week one- as he was worried about the onset from muscle soreness from completing the exercises. However his confidence has came on leaps & bounds to the point where he throws everything into every challenge & game- giving 100% effort throughout. Throughout this half term Jo has been determined to do the best he can, always targeting to beat previous scores in challenges and always looking for feedback on his technique to make sure he is completing the exercises with the best form possible- which has always been perfect!

Autumn 1 Athletes

Sam- Thomlinson Junior School 


Sam has come to every P.E lesson with a smile on his face. His enjoyment to take part in every part of the lesson is fantastic to see. Whatever challenge he is faced with he will try his best to complete. He’s challenged himself with sprinting games where he has tried to perfect a superb running style, he’s also challenged himself with throwing and catching games where he wants to always win in the 1 v 1 games. On top of this his team work is always outstanding, whoever he works with he gets on with the task with them and doesn’t make a fuss. Keep up the good work Sam!

Maryport Juniors


This young man from Maryport Juniors has been consistently giving 💯 effort into this PE this half term. We have been working on our stamina with different challenges each week. He was so pleased that he beat his 2 minute skipping score from last year 👏 as his own personal challenge.

As well as always trying his best, he is a great team player, encouraging others in his class, cheering them on and offering support.

Grayson- Ewanrigg Junior 


Well done Grayson you have shown some brilliant work this half term for our stamina events. Grayson's determination and attitude towards all our stamina challenges was always perfect. He has worked hard each week setting himself goals in each lesson to try to get the best scores he can. 

Charlie- Seaton 


Charlie from Seaton Juniors Year 6 is my athlete of the half term.  Charlie displays excellent attitude in all activities we undertake with a determination to win but with great sportsmanship at his core.  Charlie has also taken this attitude into the classroom setting.  He often shares with us his boxing achievements, being part of Maryport underdog Boxing ABC. 

Charlie is working towards his first skills bout and has travelled to Carlisle and Dumfries to spar in preparation. He certainly is a very disciplined young man, well done Charlie. 

Paige and Emily- Wiggonby Primary School 


This half term both Paige & Emily have shown fantastic determination and put in great amounts hard work to improve their stamina & fitness levels. 



During P.E lessons, in every activity or game they put in 100% effort to do the best they can. This half term- both have set the challenge to improve their skipping stamina and break the current skipping record for year 5 girls. This has led to both girls practicing at break & lunchtimes, repeatedly attempting the 2 minute challenge throughout this half term between themselves. This practice & perseverance has paid off as not only have they improved their own personal best scores, they also both beat last years records in the Stamina challenges- with Emily completing an impressive 267 skips in the 2 minute skip challenge and Paige completing the Skiprunathon Yr 5 course in 7 minutes 25 seconds. Well done girls! Very much deserved ??
